The Cruelty of Life

Life can be cruel. Even while we live, we move through shadows—moments of pain, confusion, and quiet suffering that remind us how fragile our experience is. It is easy, then, to imagine that what follows life is more of the same darkness.

But that assumption carries a flaw. Darkness, as we know it, requires awareness. It is something we feel, something we perceive. Without consciousness, there is no suffering, no fear, no sense of emptiness. There is not even darkness—only the absence of experience itself.

What follows life may not be a continuation of pain, nor a descent into some endless void we must endure. It may simply be nothing at all. Not darkness. Not light. Not peace, nor suffering. Just silence beyond perception.

And in that realization, something shifts. The weight of fearing what comes after begins to loosen. For if there is no awareness, there is nothing to fear. The cruelty of life belongs only to the living.
